Name of Activity: Color Mixing
Originating Idea: Children enjoy painting during work time
Curriculum area: Approaches to Learning (KDI: A3 Engagement)
Materials: Three primary color paints, paint brush, paper
Appropriate Age: 3 and 4 year olds
Beginning of Activity: "Many of the boys and girls in our classroom have been painting in the art area during work time. Today, I thought we could paint with these three colors. Who could tell me what colors we have at our table? (Children may reply red, yellow, blue). I wonder what will happen when we begin painting with them."
Middle of Activity:
Early: Children paint with one color at a time and may label what color paint they are using.
Middle: Children mix paint colors and notice an unintended result. Children may state the result of their experiment.
Later: Children mix paint colors with the intention of creating specific colors.
End of Activity: "I've noticed there are so many new colors than the three colors we began with. Let's put our wet paintings on the drying rack to dry and later we can display them in the art area for others to see. If you painted the color _______ today, you may hang your painting on the drying rack and _____ (transition to the next part of the day).
Follow-up Ideas:
1. Children may mix paint colors with paint bottles and paint cups, creating their own colors to paint with to add to the art area.
2. Ask children what other items could be mixed to create a different result. Add this item to the sensory table. (Example: Soap and water to make bubbles)
3. Friendship color mixing with hand-print painting
